Description
INEZONA alias Ines Brodbeck has been active in the Swiss music scene for many years. The singer, percussionist and guitarist recorded her third solo album „Now” in 2017 in the Arizona desert with Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA) and musicians from Calexico, Bob Dylan, Neko Case and Giant Sand and traced her Latin American roots. She found a soul mate in Sullivan, and “Now” became a symbol and the beginning of a creative liaison.
When Sullivan was in Switzerland in 2019, the two went to Basel’s One Drop Studio with Inezona’s musicians: Fabian Gisler (bass, synthesizer) and Eric Gut (drums, percussion) and worked on songs that had accompanied Inezona for a long time. Produced by Ines, Gabriel and Eric Gut, the harmonically and rhythmically highly complex tracks on «Heartbeat» line up smoothly and elegantly like a constantly flowing stream and testify to the great musical ability of everyone involved.
With «Stardust», a Tarantinoesque homage to the power and beauty of our planet and the universe, we dive into an album that makes you forget time and space. The title track «Heartbeat» pulsates softly and powerfully and lets its melody flow irresistibly through our senses. «The Veil» follows with an epic mix of dusk till dawn, stoner rock and thriller, and INEZONA’s voice hovers above everything, which sounds even more carrying, even more engaging on this album and at times reminds of KD Lang or Nina Persson. “I drowned in me, I drowned in you, I drowned in us” sings Inezona on “Sea Soul”. You want to sink with her into the spherical, flowing sounds and widths of this song, in the middle of which a drum wave surges in, only to then roll on in a wonderfully meditative rhythm. The single “Midnight Circle” follows the driving bass lines and polyphonic vocals of “In my heart”. The song, created in collaboration with Zatrokrev frontman Frederyk Rotter, is an ode to life and it’s finitude.
